Gordon Hayward has been out almost the entire season and is not expected back until next season, but his name came up frequently during an NBA game Wednesday night. Unfortunately, it was for the worst of reasons: Suns guard Isaiah Canaan suffered a horrific injury that reminded many of a similar calamity that befell the Celtics’ player on the league’s opening night.
In a nationally televised home game against the Mavericks, Canaan was fouled on a layup attempt near the end of the first quarter. He fell to the court awkwardly, and the sickened reaction of other players told the tale of an awful outcome.
As with Hayward, who suffered a broken tibia and dislocated left ankle, Canaan’s left foot was pointing in an unnatural direction. After he was taken off the court on a stretcher, the Suns declared Canaan out with a left ankle fracture.

While waiting for medical attention, Canaan remained notably calm, likely due to shock and/or adrenaline. Here is video of the incident, which is not for the queasy:

It wasn’t long before other NBA players began to share messages of support for Canaan on social media. Most said that they were praying for the fifth-year player.

If Canaan’s injuries turn out to be as severe as Hayward’s, he is in for a lengthy recovery that will be mentally and physically taxing. In a recent blog post at his personal website, Hayward described his rehab process as “pretty monotonous, and it’s not fun. I’m just trying to get through it.”
While the first-year Celtic, who was a standout player for the Jazz, said he was happy to have been “out of the brace for a couple weeks” and that the “act of walking finally feels normal,” he added that the “hardest part of all of this is the mental grind.”
“It’s a lot of time doing pretty boring things to get the slightest bit better every day, and of course, sometimes I don’t get better,” Hayward wrote. “Sometimes I take a small step back because my ankle didn’t react well to the thing that I did the day before. And so we have to walk it back a little. That’s the hardest part, and the most frustrating part for sure.”
The 26-year-old Canaan, who played in college at Murray State, is in his first season with the Suns, who signed him in mid-December. Earlier in the season, he had spent time with the Rockets before being waived after appearing in just one game, but he played well enough with Phoenix to have been signed for the rest of the season.

A second-round pick by the Rockets in the 2013 draft, Canaan has also played for the 76ers and Bulls. In 18 games for the Suns before Wednesday, he was averaging 9.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 22.9 minutes, but with surgery reportedly set for Thursday, Canaan’s season has come to a painful end.
